The guide is on its way — it should land within a couple of minutes. If you don't see it: check Promotions or Updates and drag it to your main inbox. That's the difference between getting the rest of this and missing it.What's coming: a one-week assignment to go with the guide, and next week, three short videos on what to actually do when a conversation is already going sideways.

Three Tools for When It's Already Hot

Once a conversation gets hot, your communication tools stop working — heart rate climbs, and the thinking part of your brain hands control to the survival system. These three don't go through the thinking brain. They work on the body directly. Use any of them before a hard conversation, during one, or after.

One — The Breath

Two inhales through the nose, the second one short, then a long slow exhale. The fastest way to bring your heart rate down. Under a minute, and nobody can tell you're doing it.

Two — The Eyes

When you're activated, your vision narrows. Deliberately widening it — softening your focus, taking in the edges of the room — sends the opposite signal back.

Three - The Name

Putting words to what you're feeling. Not necessarily out loud — just naming it. I'm angry. I'm scared. I'm sad. Naming it lowers its intensity.

Watch all three. Then pick one.The one you'll actually reach for at 9pm on a Tuesday when it's already going badly is worth more than the one that sounds best.
